Today was always planned to be a short day and we extended it for a bit so we went into and out of Wiarton up to the Bruce Caves. We are tracking good and at this stage are two days ahead of the plan which was a bit generous anyway.
It was like a gentle rest day because we were near town. Some escarpment, some paddock, some shoreline and some road. A couple of challenges, like a spiral staircase with wire patching on the treads, to get you down the cliff face, followed by a handrail down to the shoreline with poison ivy lapping over it. That was a bit cruel. Watching your step on precarious rock, going downhill with a helpful handrail that has its own booby trap!
But we saw an amazing sunrise over Sydney Bay, the ruins of a substantial house built in the 1800's, the place of the Legend Spirit, a walk around the local airport and eventually took the side trail down to the Bruce Caves. The Caves were pretty ordinary but have history for the locals. Saw a very old orchard that had pears, apples, walnuts and hawthorn berries and a lot of stuff I have no idea what they were. A bit like yesterday, doesn't seem to be attended to and let go back wild. Caught a ride back to town with the Crabby Cabby and a beautiful lunch at the Green Door Cafe.
Dinner tonight just up the road because the food is passable and it's walking distance from our digs. Tomorrow the Cabby picks us up and drops us back at the Caves and delivers our big packs to our digs for the next couple of days. Two more days of day packs so make up some distance.
We walked the two kms back to our digs and had a chilled out arvo. Nice break.
