Crabby Cabby fronted up nice and early to get us back to today's drop off point. The B & B people were up with coffee. But we had agreed to not insist on big brekky because they had other guests and it's not fair to ask them to do ridiculous early for us. Well we don't think it's early, but seems most folk do! Lovely people and a great B & B stay. Crabby had done the honours and stopped by Tim Hortons to grab us coffee for on the way. Legend!
So we're tootling on down the road/trail and can see a quad bike coming at us. Farmer......stops. Asks the usual questions and then....
Farmer - my dog will follow you
Us - we'll shoo it home
Farmer- he won't listen
Us - but he'll turn back eventually
Farmer- no he won't. He won't come home. I better go and tie him up then
And he turns around and heads back. The trail passes right through his farm. And that is where we made our first geographical error of the day. We made 3 today *laughing*. But quickly picked up and got sorted. Just funny.
Every day we see the autumn colour changes. They just get prettier and prettier. Today is no exception. I've dropped a few pics in today for you. The trail is the usual road/escarpment/woods and today just to keep us on our toes she brought back the rock scrambles! Rather like the first day into Stormhaven! BUT we're getting damned good at those rocks and it's not as tough, though still not easy!
Saw a large snake today near a swampy bit sunning himself. Nearly stood on him and jumped back and he sauntered on through the grass. Brownish/black in colour.
There's lots of bird nesting boxes on fences and they are numbered. So much forest I've no idea why the birds don't build in the trees but.......Saw a couple of raccoons in the distance on the road, but they moved on too quickly for pics and we rested on a stile for a bite to eat and a woodpecker was having some fun and we watched him and then a little chipmunk came between the trees. Think he was hoping for some scraps.
We passed through an area today with fossils but we were so watching our feet we passed before we saw them. They were down inside one of those large cracks/crevices/escarpment edges that we normally pass alongside or over but the trail took us down into the hole rather than on top of it.
Found a really unusual fern and a bug with orange shoes on and a fuzzy wuzzy caterpillar who looks like a punk rocker!
Tonight's and the next few nights at Wind in the Poplars B & B. We may end up having to do a couple of extra night. We had two camp days planned but the first one is after a very big day and then you have to go a km down a very steep hill to get water and then climb back out again. The second camp is a little doubtful on water being there. Hedley spoke to one of the local dudes responsible for this area and he suggested shuttles may be a better option.
