Woke up this morning and it was raining, What the hell happened to our good weather? There was thunder & lightening and all sorts going on outside, it was forecast to be overcast.
Today we move base out of Owen Sound, leaving Sydenham section of the Bruce Trail, well almost. We are camping 1.6km short of the boundary. The bottom line was we had to put our big Boy/Girl pants on and hike with our full packs instead of our day packs. On the way to our drop off point the skies opened up and it was chucking it down. We both thought this does not look good but thankfully as we approached our drop point the rain stopped and there was a deer standing waiting for us.
Back packs on it was time to head off up the road, 4.3km of it, not long after we got started a School bus pulled up beside us and said we should be wearing flashing warning lights. Told him it was daylight and not required, then got into a brief discussion about the Bruce Trail, obviously he had time to kill before stating to pick up kids.
Road work completed it was time to go bush again and make our way upstream to Walters Falls. Walking along below the scarp and beside the river was tough going as it was very slippery and rocky. Almost an hour to go 2.5km but the views of this beautiful wee river were worth it. We finally emerged at Walters Falls, not as spectacular as Inglis or Jones falls but beautiful all the same. We had hoped to get a coffee at the Walters Falls Inn but they are closed on Monday/Tuesday. We decided to trudge off up the hill and check out the village and thankfully found a general Store/Gas station come cafe open and yay he served Coffee, not the nest in the world but coffee.
Back on the trail again we passed a farm that had a whole flock of vVultures siting in a tree and all along on top of the fence posts, really weird to see. They were all sat there just drying themselves off. We had see these birds flying around quite a bit but were never able to identify them until today while they were sitting still.
Another short section of road and it was back up on to the scarp again but this time not right on the edge of the scarp but away from it and the terrain was just fabulous for walking along. We made good time to the side trail taking us down to the Ambrose camp site. It was posted as 160m down the hill well slipped and lid for most of it as it was completely treacherous. When we arrived we found this wee wooden shelter with running water only 30m away, perfect. We decided this was where we were going to spend the night as we have not had much opportunity to camp out on this trail.
The shelter was only just big enough for us to set up the tent inside as we did not like the idea of packing up a wet tent tomorrow. As we entered the shelter we were met by a storm cloud of Mosquitos. We quickly got some mozzie coils burning and drove the miserable little buggers out. Next task was to filter enough water for ou needs for the night.
All the domestics taken care of it was time for a quick cup of soup and settle down to chill and relax before dinner. A Back Country type meal where you put in boiling water and leave for 10 minutes to hydrate then eat. Does not sound too intriguing but it’s food. As it turned out it was edible, just.
Just to finish the day off as I went down to wash the dishes I went Ace over Base and landed flat on my back in a mud puddle. Now for a good night’s rest hopefully.
