Dubrovnik has been referred to as a glittering jewel in the Adriatic for many reasons. It's one of those places that will take your breath away at first sight. This Croatian City is walled and is one of the most magnificent places to visit on earth. I had heard stories about the beauty of Dubrovnik and so I decided to visit and explore the city. Croatia is one of the top tourist destinations in the world and therefore I expected the trip to be amazing.
Lovely weather and beaches
I visited the city in the month of September because at this time the weather is lovely. There is lots of sunshine, and the hotels are not very packed. I visited the Lapad beach to have a swim in the cool ocean waters. It was one of the best experiences of this trip. The scenery is amazingly beautiful, and the beach is quiet, a break away from the noisy city life. There are also many restaurants at the beach where you can eat and have a drink.
Your visit to Dubrovnik wouldn't be complete without a tour of the magnificent city walls. They are the city's main claim to fame and act as an ideal place to view the old town and the Adriatic sea. I took several photos because of the picturesque scenery. Entrances to the walls are found at the Maritime Museum, Pile Gate, and the Ploče Gate. Many visitors tend to use the Pile Gate, and it is, therefore, best to go through the Ploče Gate. It gives you the added advantage of avoiding the very steep climbs. It is, however, important not to tour the wall when the sun is high up because of the heat. Evening walks are the best, and you can also carry water or fluid to rehydrate. Overall, it was a memorable experience.
Restaurants
I just had to sample some of the Croatian delicacies. The Kopun Restaurant was particularly interesting because of the ambiance and the food served. As the name suggests, Kopun is Croatian for castrated rooster or a capon. It serves 'Dubrovnik capon' that has been cooked in sour orange and honey. Other accompanying ingredients include favorite traditional delicacies such as beef pašticada and stuffed squid. The meal was delightful. Restaurant 360 degrees was another place that I enjoyed eating in. It offers fine dining with creative cuisine and excellent service. Its location and the positioning of the tables means that you can have a good view of the harbor as you enjoy your meal.
Nightlife
The nightlife in Dubrovnik is awesome. One place that I had been told stories about and had to visit is the Bard Club. It's quite the right place to wind down a long day of touring the city. It's an upmarket cliff bar adjacent to the seaward side of the city walls. When the night falls, the surrounding stone is illuminated in ever-changing colors. I enjoyed cold Croatian beer as I danced the night away and mingled with the cheerful patrons.
Lokrum
One of the places you should not miss out while in Dubrovnik is Lokrum, a small but beautiful islands found close to Dubrovnik. Many tourists like to take a boat from a charter and visit this magical island, which was also one of the filming destinations of the popular TV series Game of Thrones. Since Lokrum is not that big, its the perfect place to spend one sunny afternoon walking around and enjoying the untouched beauty of the mediterranean.
Dubrovnik is a wonderful place to visit, and anyone who travels to the walled city will leave with great memories. From the people to the points of interest, it is one of the best destinations that I've ever traveled to.
