A wonderfully enjoyable zoo in Cyprus, which is a pleasant addition to the usual tourists attractions on the island. A fairly small zoo but with a surprisingly large range of animals, including tigers, elephants, giraffes, snakes, meerkats. It also has a large range of birds including Ostriches and other exotic birds.
What I experienced here
A compact zoo but with a full range of animals including tigers, elephants, lions, birds, giraffes and reptiles. Many of the enclosures are quite small considering the animals they house and some are quite old and an in need of a cleaning and repair. Mots of the new enclosures for the bigger animals seem OK. The layout is well organise around an orbital path with side lanes to other parts of the zoo.
We walked around the entire zoo but missed out on the demonstrations as it was a very hot day
I was a little sad for the animals as many of the cages were old and tired and seemed not to have been cleaned very often. However, given the climate of Cyprus, I felt they were more at home here than if it was a UK zoo and a cold climate. Many of he animals seems to be mating or carrying out mating rituals. The ostrich for instance was doing a strange dance and waving his head from side to side before mounting his mate. I felt that given that so many of he animals were happy to mate that this was a good sign that they were reasonably content being here.
